The Beginning

One auspicious evening in 2014, Seema and her hubby sat at the dinner table in Hong Kong, far from their home countries, discussing the great need for more de-stress programs in this city that never sleeps. Knowledgeable of the healing power of foods, Seema saw ‘nutrition’ as another widely neglected issue: Overwhelmed by their busy schedules, most people would not manage to have truly healthy meals or even be aware of the power that lies in anti-inflammatory beverages. Further, a peaceful mind gained through any kind of spiritual practice was not part of most people’s hectic lives.

This night culminated in the founding of Hong Kong’s first yogic food business: PRANAYUM.

While yoga fans all over the world may be familiar with the term Pranayama (exercises to manage one’s life energy through breath), the yummy side of this new venture makes for the ‘u’ in the name.

With no outspoken business expertise yet charged with enthusiasm and great passion, Seema ignited PRANAYUM as a food catering business. Word travelled around that Seema’s lunchboxes were just the best. Large corporates placed orders and soon Seema found herself just as busy as those she wanted to save from their stress.

Nico comes on board

During this time, Seema met Nico at a yoga teacher training and it safe to say that it ‘clicked’ right away: Nico had his own superfood business and instantly shared Seema’s vision for health foods and meditation while his German drive for perfection and Seemas African-Indian spirit turned out to be an incredibly fruitful completion. Both had the deep desire to support a charity project and make that not just an add-on, but instead cherish it as an integral core part their operation. Following some research, discussions and even a personal trip to India to approve the project, they selected the ‘Gift A Smile’ program in India as receiver of regular donations from PRANAYUM profits.

It’s Tea Time!

Following the evident success of Seema’s Chai tea, a recipe handed down from grandmother to granddaughter, we decided to focus on developing a wellness line of sacred teas, which is based on ancient wisdom. Developing the tea line as well as our whole brand has been utmost joy for us and with a previous career as designer, Nico could do the trick to create the look that Seema had seen in her dreams.

We also began hosting our Sacred Events – mini retreats with yoga, guided meditation and – of course – healthy drinks. Trial and error made us learn the lessons for business and we realised that we were on the right track as orders started coming in and the teas went on the shelves. Everyone loved the teas!

The desire to work for a higher purpose and gift sacred moments inspires us every day again. Our vision for a society with less stress and more peace is leading our way forward and we dearly send our blessings to you and to the whole planet earth.
